The Philips MC235B and similar models all have some issues from the factory, and they will all experience failure unless repair work is performed to rectify them.  To start, the main electrolytic power filter capacitor is very prone to failure.  This particular filter capacitor is simply doomed from the get-go because it comes from a bad batch/lot and needs to be replaced before further damage to the unit occurs. As a result of the failed filter cap, the power section is unable to filter the ripple current during AC-to-DC rectification.  This creates an annoying and sometimes very loud 60hz hum out of the speakers.  This power filter cap visually looks damaged (it is domed on top when it should be flat), and it also tests poorly (capacitance shows a very low value).   The bench time required for this repair is longer than most repairs because of the way Philips oriented the PC board inside and with multiple connections (including the laser assembly).  Fortunately, this process also grants us the excuse to further rectify other known issues (some mandatory) and also to make some improvements.
Work performed:
The main power filter cap was replaced with a much higher quality cap
New heatsink compound applied to voltage regulator and 2-channel audio amplifer output chip
Removed old factory-applied adhesive around sensitive components and traces (it becomes conductive over time)
Applied some tonal improvements that reduce the boomy character of the system from the factory
Cleaned and polished RCA input jacks on the rear of the unit
Blew compressed air throughout unit to remove any dust and debris
Cleaned CD laser assembly, cleaned guide rails and re-greased them
Cleaned outside of unit
Remote cleaned/disinfected and new CR2025 battery installed.
Replaced the belt that drives the motor which opens/closes the CD cover and cleaned/regreased associated gears
Result:
Unit performs more reliably and sounds much better than before.  Details in the music are more apparent and the overall quality is more soulful and lively with a nice punch.  There's also no hum like the other used/new units out there!
Why purchase our refurbished unit over a New one?  It is worth looking for a unit which has the proper mandatory work performed, as those other non-refurbished (even new) units will have eventual issues.  New-in-box units do not offer protection against both the poor quality capacitor issue and also the conductive adhesive problem on these boards.  In fact, the less that a electrolytic capacitor is used, the faster the rate of deteoration and "leakage" as the internal electroytic solution dries up.  In other words, a New, non-used system can be a faster ticking time-bomb than a well-used one, especially in the case of subpar electrolytic caps.  You should not purchase any systems from the 1999-2008 era (due to the "capacitor plague") unless offending capacitors have been replaced with good ones, and conductive adhesive removed from sensitive areas.
The overall condition of this mini hifi system is great. We polished/buffed the CD cover to help smooth some of the minor scratches that have happened over time.  There is one major scratch that we provided a close-up picture of.  These blemishes do not effect the performance of this mini hifi system. We've listed the specs below. As with most systems, an FM antenna is not included, but we simply used a long wire and plugged it into one of the rear push-terminal connections designated for the FM antenna.

:  If you are using a single wire for the FM antenna and want to pull in FM stations in
stereo
, you must connect the wire to the
right
push-terminal of the pair (when facing the rear of the unit).  Plugging the wire to the
left
push-terminal connection only results in mono FM station reception, even if the stereo indicator is illuminated on the display.
